U-pick trip planner
Time the trip, not just the crop
Crop + state → the typical picking window. We'll say it straight: farms run a couple of weeks either side of any chart, so the last step is always a phone call.
Choose a crop and a state to see the window.
How to read a picking window
Early — the scout's trip
Lighter picking and you'll work for it, but the fields are quiet and you get first pick of the clean rows. Call first: "just opened" can mean one field, not the farm.
Peak — the sure bet
Full fields, fast buckets, and the flavor the crop is famous for. Weekends get busy; go early in the day while it's cool and the bushes are still full.
Late — the preserver's window
Prices drop and quantity is easy, though you'll sort a little more. This is the trip for jam quantities and freezer stock.
Always — the two-week rule
Any farm can run up to two weeks ahead of or behind the typical window. The chart gets you to the right couple of weeks; the phone call gets you to the right morning.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to go u-pick?
The sweet spot is usually the first half of peak: fields are full, fruit is clean, and the crowds haven't stripped the easy rows yet. Early season means lighter picking but first choice; late season means bargains and preserving quantity.
Why does the planner say to call ahead?
Because farms genuinely vary — up to two weeks either side of the typical window depending on the year, the variety, and the field. Most u-pick farms post picking conditions by phone or social media the same morning. Two minutes of checking beats an hour of driving.
What should I bring to a u-pick farm?
Shallow containers for soft fruit (berries crush under their own weight), sun cover, water, and cash — plenty of farms are card-free. Our pick-it-ripe cards tell you what to look for on the plant.
